Best Restaurants in Siolim

Shiori

A charming roadside Yakitori bar, Shiori (smartly named to sound like ‘Shioli’ which is Siolim in Konkani) makes you feel like you’ve just entered a bar in a backstreet of Tokyo. But scratch the surface and you can feel a bit of Goan-ness peeking through – be it the exposed red brick walls, cane-backed chairs, or the facade, which still has hints of its erstwhile avatar – a simple hardware store.

Shiori aspires to bring you delicious, yet simple Japanese cuisine, and that it does. Pick from a number of delicious Yakitori, sushi, ramen bowls, noodles, salads, and other crowd-pleasing Pan Asian dishes.

Sungta by the Road

A Goan-run, woman-run restaurant in Siolim, Sungta by the Road is not your average family dining spot. There are so many things that caught my eye here – the fact that the staff is attentive, the quality, taste, and presentation of the food, the spic and span interiors that were comfortable and beautiful… And I also got a glimpse into the kitchen through the window, on my way to the bar and was happy to see that it was spotless, with everyone wearing hairnets!

Even the white cushioned seats in the restaurant were pristine. And the food – well those plates speak for themselves. The team at Sungta by the Road goes the extra mile to make you eat with your eyes as well as your tastebuds. I tried a few items from the Goan, Indian, and Oriental sections and each item was beautifully plated, extremely flavourful, and out of the ordinary.

I loved the prawn tempura, butter garlic prawns, dahi kebabs, and crispy chicken, The ghee roast chicken was a bit too spicy for me, and the thali was fabulous – featuring ‘samarache kodi’ (dried prawn curry), para (pickled dry fish) a slab of fresh fish, kismoor (dry prawn salad), tiny pooris and vohn for dessert. In short, many items that are not commonly seen in Goan thalis, but are dearly loved by Goans. Give this place a try and I’m sure you’ll leave impressed. The thalis are available on the weekends for lunch.

Hosa

The contemporary flavours of South India have made their way to Siolim in style at this restaurant in Siolim. Aptly named Hosa or ‘new’ in Kannada, this beautiful restaurant dishes up an impeccable parade of modern South Indian cuisine. From the outside, Hosa’s exterior resembles a meticulously preserved Goan house, but upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a magnificent bar showcasing an array of over a hundred premium spirits. Amble around from room to room to pick your preferred table – and while you’re at it – admire the artwork on the wall, which may change every time you visit.

Hosa comes to us from the makers of Indian Accent, one of India’s finest restaurants, and it brings us South India’s vast repertoire of flavours with nuance and flair. The bar menu is one of the most impressive and well-thought-out ones I’ve seen. If you thought that Hosa is a fine dining restaurant in Siolim, you’d be right, however, it still embodies a casual, friendly, approachable personality – both from the servers, the music, and the food and drinks. My go-to’s are the coconut shrimp, mutton pepper roast, ginger tamarind pork ribs and the Nellai chicken curry.

Taste 11 Restaurant

It’s getting harder to find simple, affordable meals in Goa but locally run places like Taste 11 Restaurant in Siolim still cater to budget-conscious travelers and locals looking for a simple lunch. Located just before the Siolim-Morjim bridge and up a spiral staircase, this terrace restaurant has a limited selection of seafood appetizers and thalis on offer.

It’s a no-frills place but is well-maintained, clean and hygienic. The menu at this eatery in Siolim comprises a small selection of non-alcoholic drinks (their Orange Mojito is really nice) and rava-fried seafood. The thalis here are unlimited (except for the chapatis and fish) which makes it a popular lunch spot. With thalis starting at Rs. 179, do not expect anything exceptional or even homely – the food borders on basic, at best.

Velvet Scoops Gelato

Nothing makes me happier than seeing Goan women businesswomen – especially those who are obsessed with their businesses and love delivering the very best to their customers. So I was thrilled to discover  Velvet Scoops in Siolim, and taste the quality of their offerings.

The gelatos here are made with so much love by the owner, Dipika, who learned the art of gelato making in the US. Each flavour is made with quality ingredients and every scoop is loaded with fresh fruit making it irresistible! Try the raspberry yogurt, chikoo and tender coconut gelatos here – although I love chocolate-y flavours, I found the fruity ones outshone the indulgent ones.

Velvet Scoops also offers a range of sandwiches and wraps with every ingredient bought, chopped and prepped that very morning. It’s not often that you find a gelato place doing good coffee, but the cappuccino here was noteworthy. More gelato spots in Goa here.

Coco’s Kitchen

Coco’s Kitchen – Thai Street Food has been around long before the other restaurants on this list came to be, and while many other restaurants in Siolim came and stole the limelight (and also shut), they stand quiet, but tall. This inconspicuous restaurant does fabulous Thai fare – and I’ve never been disappointed in all my years of visiting. Get the spring rolls with a sweet and spicy dip, chicken wings, papaya salad, Thai curry with rice, and Pad Thai. For dinner, if it’s mango season time, don’t miss the mango and sticky rice for dessert. Being a small and humble restaurant, the prices here are not cheap.

Alag

If you’re ever in Siolim and in the mood for some Far East-Asian flavors, Alag is a quaint spot worth checking out. Tucked away in a peaceful backyard, this cafe offers a delightful spread of coffee, sandwiches, and their specialty – fluffy Japanese Cheesecake and chunky cookies. The ambiance exudes a simple, almost Scandinavian charm, complete with cozy outdoor seating. I especially love their logo, iconography, and the cuteness that you find everywhere from the coasters and crockery, to the cafe’s aesthetics.

The indoor a/c section might feel a bit snug as it can only accommodate 6-7 people comfortably, which means that private conversations or business conversations would be impossible to have. You could choose to sit in the outside section which has 2-3 tables, however, the bench-style seating can be uncomfortable after a point.

The menu features tempting chunky cookies and butter toast on Japanese milk bread that’s worth a try. The red velvet chunky cookie stuffed with white chocolate is yum! Alag won’t disappoint with their range of coffees. I tried the Saigon coffee with coconut milk but the next time, I’d tone down the sweetness when I order it.  The cafe also has a tiny section with merch, such as tote bags and t-shirts.

This cafe isn’t really known or frequented by locals, so the conversation that you would inevitably be privy to, given the cafe’s petite size, is a sign of the times in Goa. IYKYK.

What are your top restaurants in Siolim?

I used to love Dakte, but it recently closed (I’m not sure if they are closed temporarily or permanently), and Davide’s Pizzeria which used to be in Sinquerim moved to Siolim a couple of years ago, too. I haven’t been there yet, as well as to many other restaurants in Siolim and I’ll be sure to update this list when I do! Until then, I hope you enjoy these reccos!
