While some days demand to be kickstarted with a bowl of Upma or oats, some others want to ease into it with a hearty spread of a lazy English breakfast. A good platter of eggs well-done, sausages, bacon and toast with a side of butter and jam, can never go wrong. They can help you start your slow Sunday (or Monday!) on just the right note of wholesomeness and contentment. If you are in Goa and looking to soak your mornings in a hearty English breakfast, here are the best places to find it:
English Breakfasts in Goa
Caravela Cafe, Candolim/Panjim/Margao
Caravela Cafe is a slice of an experience worth indulging in. Quietly wedged between the colourful architecture of the Latin Quarters, it offers not just an array of local selections but also a vast choice in international affairs as well. The cafe itself is a part of the old Indo-Portuguese architecture of Goa and its decor contributes to a fulfilling and warm breakfast experience. Caravela Cafe also has a second outlet on the busy Candolim stretch, right beside Lawande Supermarket. And while the Panjim cafe is usually bustling, heading to the Candolim one will guarantee you a table. Don’t forget to try their coffees too.
Baba Au Rhum, Anjuna
House-full within minutes of opening, Baba Au Rhum is a lavish cafe that sits alongside the sprawling fields of Anjuna. They offer a wide variety of breakfast and lunch/dinner options along with vegan alternatives as well. However, their English breakfast tops the list and is worth indulging in. What makes this English brekkie a bit different from other places is that it features a heap of sauteed onions on the side (and no hash browns), as well as homemade pork sausages and a basket full of bread, as opposed to two slices of toast.
Orange Boom, Anjuna
Orange Boom is a gorgeous alfresco that offers the choicest of breakfast spreads and juices. It’s tucked away in a quiet little corner in Anjuna and at first glance, gives off a really warm and homely vibe. The cafe, founded in 1989, is known to be one of the first few to focus on offering breakfast options, especially some common favourites like muesli, sandwiches, omelettes with a million stuffings and so on. They even offer bits from international cuisines such as the Croque Madame and bruschetta. It’s definitely my pick for #1 best English breakfast in Goa. Do note that the cafe is shut for half the year during off-season.
Cafe Chocolatti, Candolim
Cafe Chocolatti is an English-style garden that offers a welcoming and peaceful environment to help you start your day right. The alfresco cafe is a part of a grand and gorgeous home and apart from breakfasts, serves a range of desserts, drinks, salads, and even sundaes. Their American breakfast is worth trying for the soft, fluffy pancakes that come alongside your eggs.
Sugar Flower, Panjim
Sugar Flower’s ‘Breakfast of Champions’ is curated to live up to its name. Located in the heart of the city of Panjim, the cafe is loved for its dainty decor and cosy ambience. While you’re losing yourself to the lip-smacking English spread, try not to fall head over heels in love with their adorable little cupcakes.
Cafe Zelo, Margao
Whether you’re after an American, English or Mediterranean, sweet, savoury, indulgent or healthy breakfast, check out Cafe Zelo. While their breakfasts consist of a hearty assortment of classic morning dishes to dive into, you can also order from their a la carte menu that has fantastic options like wraps, snacks, sandwiches, salads, flatbreads, rice based meals, pastas, and more. I love their tacos and chicken wings with charcoal honey lemonade. If you order their English breakfast, get the scrambled eggs – they are the creamiest, cheesiest, most-perfectly done scrambled eggs you’ll find.
